Router on a Stick — Inter Vlan Routing

Routing !!! Routing is just a basic networking term , which basically means the forwarding of packets or data requests according to the different protocols . Routing are of two kinds we already discussed in https://omkhard09.medium.com/static-routing-2935ba68a6d2 and one is Dynamic Routing . We will discuss Dynamic Routing in some other Stories but we have Inter Vlan Routing . Routing can be done in any form , like how an Network Engineer wants to make the network works for each and every prospect.

Inter Vlan Routing is simply communication between two or more different Vlan. I will say Switches connect the different vlans , but a Switch in default Vlansing can’t make communication between Inter Vlan . In traditional/default Vlansing the PC of Vlan 1 can’t communicate to the other PC which is in Vlan 2 in an example . So to overcome this drawback the upper layer device Router comes in the scene as a hero to direct the packets to the right direction ; )

So to communicate between two or more vlan we use Router and , we need to configure Inter Vlan Routing in the Router . We usually make the subinterfaces in the Router which acts as the Gateways for the vlans. We need to make the connection of Switch and Router as a Trunk . And its more important to encapsulate the subinterfaces in Router , the subinterfaces has to be the same as the <vlan name>. I will say that this method (Router on a Stick) is used in every network infrastructure where there are different vlans create (like in a Company’ Network where there are different vlan for Sales , Services , Programming , etc ) to communicate between them.
